INDIANA, Pa. – Despite a team-high 23 points from junior
Megan Smith (Blain, Pa./West Perry), the IUP women's basketball team dropped a 75-65 decision to Edinboro in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play on Saturday evening at the Kovalchick Complex.
With the loss, the Crimson Hawks fall to 12-3 overall and 10-1 in PSAC play while seeing their 12-game winning streak snapped. Meanwhile, Edinboro improves to 15-2 overall behind an 11-0 mark in conference play and takes over sole possession of first place in the PSAC West standings.
Smith finished with 23 points on 8-of-13 shooting to go along with 11 rebounds, two assists, two blocks and one steal. Sophomore
Carolyn Appleby (Greensburg, Pa. /Greensburg Central Catholic) scored 14 points, three assists and one steal while redshirt sophomore
Lauren Wolosik (Pittsburgh, Pa. /North Catholic) added 12 points, eight rebounds, four steals and three assists.
IUP began the game on a 9-0 run after a three-pointer from Smith at the 8:19-mark. Edinboro responded with an 8-1 run over the next three-minutes to cut the Crimson Hawks lead to 10-8. Michelle Jahn then hit a three-pointer to the game at 13-13 at the 3:44-mark. The Crimson Hawks countered with three-pointers from Wolosik and Appleby.
After Smith hit a pair of free-throws and a layup, sophomore
Brittany Robinson (Harrisburg, Pa. /Central Dauphin East) added a layup to push the IUP lead to six (25-19) at the 6:58-mark of the second quarter. Robinson's layup began an 8-2 that extended the lead to 31-21 with just under four-minutes left in the first half. The Fighting Scots answered by cutting the lead to 36-28 with a pair of free-throws by Jontay Walton before the Crimson Hawks took a 36-30 halftime lead.
Robinson pushed the IUP lead to 40-34 at the 7:33-mark of the third quarter with a layup. Edinboro then countered with an 8-3 run, highlighted by a Walton three-pointer, to cut the Crimson Hawks lead to 43-42 midway through the quarter. A layup from Jahn then gave the Fighting Scots their first lead of the game at 48-46 with 3:32 to play in the quarter.
Edinboro began the fourth quarter on a 9-0 run to push its lead to 60-49 after a Katie Fischer three-pointer at the 7:24-mark. A pair of free-throws from Smith cut the Edinboro lead to seven (64-57) midway through the quarter. Jahn then made a layup to push the Edinboro lead to 69-59 with just under three-minutes to play in the fourth. A layup from Wolosik pulled IUP to within 72-63 with 1:11 to play before Edinboro earned the win.
The Fighting Scots were led by a game-high 32 points from Ciara Rosten. Walton added 15 points while Fischer added 11 points.
IUP shot at 39.3 percent (22-of-56) clip while Edinboro connected at a 48.3 percent (29-of-60) clip. IUP held a slim 34-32 rebounding margin.
