INDIANA, Pa. – The IUP women's basketball team dropped a 79-52 decision to sixth-ranked California (Pa.) in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play on Wednesday evening at the Kovalchick Complex.
With the loss, the Crimson Hawks fall to 12-4 and 10-2 in conference play. Meanwhile, the Vulcans improve to 17-1 overall and 11-1 in league play.
Sophomore
Brittany Robinson (Harrisburg, Pa. /Central Dauphin East) scored a team-high 14 points on 7-of-10 shooting and grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds. She added two blocks and two steals. Classmate
Carolyn Appleby (Greensburg, Pa. /Greensburg Central Catholic) added eight points while redshirt sophomore
Lauren Wolosik (Pittsburgh, Pa. /North Catholic) chipped in with six points and six rebounds.
California took an early 4-2 first quarter lead on a pair of Seairra Barrett free-throws before IUP tied the game at 6-6 on layup from Robinson at the 5:44-mark. The Vulcans responded by closing out the quarter on an 11-4 run to take a 17-10 lead. California then pushed the lead to 25-10 after beginning the second quarter on an 8-0 run after an Abbey Sporio layup at the at the 6:30-mark. A layup from Robinson cut the Vulcan lead to 17 (29-12) with just under four-minutes remaining in the half. California once again answered and closed the half on an 11-6 run to take a 40-18 lead.
The Vulcans then pushed the lead to 48-22 after a Lana Doran layup with 7:15 to play in the third quarter. California then extended the lead to a game-high 29 (53-24) at the 5:29-mark. The Crimson Hawks responded with an 11-3 to pull to within 55-35 after a free-throw from sophomore
Ana Hollen (Bellwood, Pa./Bellwood). The IUP defense forced three California turnovers while not allowing a field goal during the run. In the fourth quarter the Crimson Hawks pulled to within 21 (65-44) before the Vulcans put the game out of reach with a 10-4 run to go up by 29 with 2:38 to play.
California was led by a game-high 27 points from Barrett, as well as 15 points from Miki Glenn.
IUP shot at a 38.6 percent (22-of-57) clip compared to 47.6 percent (30-of-63) for California. The Crimson Hawks held a 40-35 rebounding margin
