INDIANA, Pa. – Mansfield scored the game-winning goal with just over two minutes to play as IUP field hockey fell to the Mountaineers 2-1 on Wednesday afternoon at Miller Stadium.
It was the fifth straight loss on the year for the Crimson Hawks, who dropped their season record to 5-11 overall and 2-7 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC). Mansfield improved to 8-9 overall and 3-6 in the league.
The loss comes despite a huge advantage for the Crimson Hawks in shots (23-10) and penalty corners (21-11).
Mansfield opened up the scoring in the 13th minute, and held onto that lead throughout most of the game. The Crimson Hawks tied things up with a goal from
Kalista Gioglio (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) with 10 minutes to play, scoring off their 20th penalty corner of the game.
Moments later, a deflected shot off of the pads of IUP goalie
Olivia Accardi (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) was put to the back of the cage by Mansfield's Amber Prince for the game-winning goal.
IUP had one final chance on a penalty corner with just over 30 seconds left to play, but a shot sailed wide and Mansfield clinched the win.
