KUTZTOWN, Pa. – A penalty stroke goal by
Madelyn Mullen (Chester Springs, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) sent the game to overtime, but a score by Kutztown nearly 12 minutes into the extra period was the decider in IUP field hockey's 3-2 loss at Kutztown on Saturday afternoon.
Mullen scored in the game's 52nd minute, tying the score at 2-2 as the contest went to overtime 18 minutes later. Then, in the 82nd minute, the Golden Bears seized victory with a rebound goal and the overtime winner.
The Crimson Hawks fell to 5-7 overall and 2-3 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) with the loss. Kutztown improved to 7-5 and 2-3.
Elizabeth Clemmer (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) scored the game's opening goal, taking her own rebound to find the bottom right corner of the cage to give IUP the early lead.
Kutztown scored twice in the first half, first in the 18th minute and then again in the 31st to take a 2-1 lead at halftime.
Mullen's score came after six second half shots by the Crimson Hawks, but IUP managed just two more the rest of the way compared to Kutztown's 12 in the final 30 minutes of game action.
Next week
IUP is in action twice next week, hosting Mercyhurst on Wednesday before traveling to No. 1 Shippensburg on Saturday.
