BOWIE, Md. – The ninth-ranked Crimson Hawks shot nearly 60 percent in the second half, rebounding from a low-scoring first half to score a 53-37 win at Bowie State in a battle between undefeated regional powers on Wednesday night.
IUP improved to 5-0 with the victory, picking up a win in its first game away from home this year.
Senior forward
Megan Smith (Blain, Pa./West Perry) scored a game-high 15 points, shooting 6-of-11 from the field with five rebounds in 38 minutes.
She was one of three IUP players to reach double-figures in scoring, including junior guard
Carolyn Appleby (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Central Catholic) with 14 points and redshirt junior guard
Lauren Wolosik (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Catholic) with 11 points.
The Crimson Hawks led just 15-13 at halftime, as both teams combined to shoot just 12-of-49 from the floor. IUP came out hot in the third quarter, using a 10-0 run during a 2:08 span to grab a 32-21 lead near the end of the period.
The scoring continued in the fourth, with an 8-0 giving the Crimson Hawks a comfortable 18-point lead with five minutes to play. After just 15 points in the first half, IUP scored a combined 38 points in the third and fourth quarters to post the 26-point win. IUP finished the night shooting 42.6 percent from the floor.
