Appleby nets 20 points, IUP Women’s Basketball defeats Pitt 73-68 in final exhibition

PITTSBURGH – Junior point guard Carolyn Appleby (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Central Catholic) scored 20 points with just one turnover in 33 minutes as she helped IUP women's basketball to a 73-68 upset win over the University of Pittsburgh on Sunday afternoon at the Petersen Events Center.

Appleby shot 6-of-16 from the field and 6-of-6 from the foul line, and was one of several individual standouts in the statement exhibition win.

Redshirt junior guard Lauren Wolosik (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Catholic) scored 17 points on 6-of-12 shooting, including 3-of-5 from long range with five rebounds, three assists and three steals in 39 minutes on the court. Junior forward Brittany Robinson (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, going 8-of-12 from the charity stripe with four assists, three blocks and two steals. Senior forward Megan Smith (Blain, Pa./West Perry) was the fourth player in double-figures for the Crimson Hawks with 12 points with four rebounds, four assists and two steals.

The Crimson Hawks won the turnover battle by forcing Pitt into 20 on the afternoon, with IUP players totaling 11 steals.

IUP shot just 32 percent from the field in the first half, but went 14-of-16 from the foul line to go into halftime tied with the Panthers at 37-37. The offense picked it up in the second half, shooting 45 percent (14-of-31) while outrebounding Pitt 20-to-18.

The Crimson Hawks built a 6-point lead at 61-55 midway through the fourth quarter and held off several Pitt advances to remain in the lead. The Panthers narrowed their gap to 67-65 with 43 seconds to play, but IUP answered right back with a layup by Wolosik on the ensuing possession.

IUP then forced Pitt into its 20th turnover and Robinson sank a pair from the foul line to make it a 71-65 ball game with six seconds to play, icing the victory.
