Crimson Hawks Softball splits a pair on Friday in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. – The IUP softball team split a pair of games on Friday at The Spring Games, dropping a 5-0 decision to Bemidji State before earning a 1-0 eight-inning victory over Saint Michael's in the nightcap.

With the split, the Crimson Hawks move to 6-5 on the season. Meanwhile the Beaves improve to 8-3 while the Purple Knights fall to 0-9 overall.

In game one Bemidji State jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the second on solo home run from Jessica Yost. The Beavers then added two runs in the top of the third before IUP threatened in the bottom half of the inning. The Crimson Hawks put runners on second base twice but were not able to push a run across the board.

Bemidji State added two runs in the top of the seventh. IUP fought back in the bottom half of the inning. After Amanda Spindler (Brownsburg, Ind./Cathedral) reached via a fielder's choice Kassie Kesneck () singled to put runners on first and second. Mackenna Miller (Milton, Pa. /Milton) then loaded the bases after reaching on a two-out error before a groundout ended the game.

Against Saint Michael's, IUP put runners on first and second in the top of the second but were not able to plate a run. The Purple Knights threatened in the bottom of the fourth after Danielle Barbato doubled. Crimson Hawks starter Megan Risinger (Creekside, Pa./Marion Center) then struck out Torie Rathwell before forcing a groundout. The game remained scoreless until the top of the eighth. A Kaitlyn Beers (Reynoldsville, Pa./DuBois Area High School) single advanced Alaina Montgomery (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) to third. Beers then stole second allowing Montgomery to score on a throwing error.

Risinger earned the win by tossing all eight innings. She struck out six while scattering five hits.
