Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. – The IUP softball team split its final two games at The Spring Games on Saturday at Legends Way Ballfields, defeating Southern Connecticut State 9-0 in five innings before losing to Dominican 2-1.
With the split, the Crimson Hawks move to 7-6 on the season. Meanwhile, the Owls move to 2-6 while the Chargers move to 7-6 on the season.
Against Southern Connecticut State, IUP jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the second inning on a
Megan Little (Harrison City, Pa./Penn Trafford) home run. The Crimson Hawks then added to the lead in the third inning with timely hitting as infielder
Hannah Mercer (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg Area) drew a walk. She then scored on an RBI double from
Amanda Parrish (Dysart, Pa./Altoona).
Kaitlyn Beers (Reynoldsville, Pa./DuBois Area High School) then drove Parrish in with a single to push the lead to 3-0. All that happened with two outs.
In the fifth the Crimson Hawks exploded for six runs to secure the run-rule victory. A
Laura Cotter (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) walk loaded the bases before
Alaina Montgomery (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) followed with a two-run single to make it 5-0.
Kassie Kesneck () then hit a three-run home run to put the Crimson Hawks up 8-0 before
Lauren Goetz (Cleveland, Ohio/Cuyahoga Heights) scored on a Mercer single.
Mercer and Cotter each had two hits while Mercer collected an RBI. Kesneck drove in three runs while Montgomery was 1-for-3 with two RBI.
Against Dominican, Beers put the Crimson Hawks up 1-0 in the bottom of the second with a solo home run to center. The game remained 1-0 until the Chargers tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the sixth on an error. Dominican took the lead in the top of the ninth on a sac fly. After placing
Ashley Smith (Roaring Spring, Pa./Central) on second to begin the inning, IUP was retired in order in the bottom half of the ninth.
Goetz was 2-for-5 while Beers was 1-for-4 with a home run and RBI.
Crimson Hawks starter
Lauren Zola (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seton-La Salle) threw all nine innings and suffered the loss. She struck out four while scattering four hits and allowing two unearned runs.
Senior pitcher
Amanda Spindler (Brownsburg, Ind./Cathedral) earned the win after tossing four innings while striking out two and yielding just one single and one walk.

IUP returns to action on Thursday, March 23 when it travels to Wheeling Jesuit for its final non-conference tune-up. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
