INDIANA, Pa. – The 2026 season was one of the most memorable in IUP softball history, and the Crimson Hawks continued to collect accolades long after the final out was recorded. This time, the recognition came in the classroom, as a program-record 21 student-athletes earned NFCA Scholar-Athlete honors.
The Crimson Hawks enjoyed a historic campaign under head coach Shawna Bellaud, tying the program record with 38 victories while advancing to the PSAC semifinals. Along the way, IUP saw multiple program records fall and several players receive conference, regional and national recognition.
The success extended well beyond the diamond.
Ten Crimson Hawks recorded perfect 4.0 grade-point averages during the academic year, while another 11 student-athletes finished with GPAs of 3.5 or higher to earn NFCA Scholar-Athlete recognition. The 21 honorees are the most in program history and reflect the program's continued commitment to excellence in both athletics and academics.
IUP's balance of success on the field and in the classroom has become a hallmark of Bellaud's program. In addition to tying the school record for wins, the Crimson Hawks also captured the PSAC West regular-season championship and made their deepest conference tournament run since 2009.
The program also produced one of the most accomplished senior classes in school history. Delaney Patella became IUP's career home run leader, while Madison Pikula finished her career as the program's all-time hits leader. Both players were among the 10 student-athletes who earned perfect 4.0 GPAs.
The Crimson Hawks' academic achievements were recognized throughout the season. Several student-athletes earned CSC Academic All-District honors, while Patella was named a CSC Academic All-American after completing her career with a 3.8 cumulative GPA.
In addition to the individual honors, IUP is also in contention to finish among the top 10 NCAA Division II softball programs in team GPA. The NFCA will announce the final team academic rankings later in August.
