INDIANA, Pa. – Sophomore
Lauren Robinson (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck High) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal with 2:22 remaining as 17th-ranked IUP women's lacrosse defeated Millersville 11-9 on Saturday afternoon at Miller Stadium.
The goal for Robinson was her second of the day – both the first of the year for the attacker – who scored both goals in the second half. They were two of the Crimson Hawks seven second half goals, as they came back from a 6-4 halftime deficit.
It was the third straight win for the Crimson Hawks, who improved to 3-2 overall and 2-0 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC). They join Slippery Rock as the only two 2-0 teams in the conference. Millersville fell to 4-3 and 1-2.
Late run for IUP erases tie, secures win
After the Crimson Hawks opened the second half with a 4-1 run to take an 8-7 lead, Millersville seemed to take back momentum with a game-tying goal with 4:37 left to play. Just 26 seconds later, freshman
Kelly Shields (Grasonville, Md./Kent Island) found classmate
Shannon Hartigan (Babylon, N.Y./Babylon) as IUP regained the lead.
The goal was the first of three straight for the Crimson Hawks over the final four minutes, as Robinson added her goal followed by another from
Bri Chavis (Sykesville,Md./Century) with 41 seconds to play. Millersville picked up one final score by Taylor Davis with seconds to play.
Statistical domination
The Crimson Hawks topped Millersville in nearly every statistical category, including shots (37-17), ground balls (28-15), draw controls (14-8), and caused turnovers (17-7).
Shields finished with a team-high three goals while causing three turnovers. Robinson and sophomores
Ally Burrows (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) and
Adriana Greco (Sound Beach, N.Y./Rocky Point) each scored two goals. Another sophomore,
Mollie Gallagher (Evans City, Pa./Seneca Valley), had four ground balls and three caused turnovers.
Shields, Gallagher and Robinson were named the Three Stars of the game for IUP.
