INDIANA, Pa. – Despite a four goal effort from sophomore attacker
Adriana Greco (Sound Beach, N.Y./Rocky Point), the No. 18 IUP women's lacrosse team dropped a narrow 14-12 decision to Tiffin in non-conference action at George P. Miller Stadium on Wednesday evening.
With the loss, the Crimson Hawks fall to 3-3 overall this season. Meanwhile, the Dragons improve to 5-3 and extend their winning streak to four games.
The four goals marked the fifth multi-goal game of the year for Greco.
Carissa Smith (East Brunswick, N.J./East Brunswick),
Ally Burrows (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) and
Kelly Shields (Grasonville, Md./Kent Island) each added two goals in the loss. Shields and defender
Hannah Bertolo (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) each totaled three ground balls. Bertolo led the team with three caused turnovers while Shields and
Maggie Malane (Mullica Hill, N.J./Clearview Regional) each added two.
The two teams each scored relatively quickly as Tiffin jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the 28:47-mark of the first half on a goal from Elle Hamilton. IUP then tied the game at 1-1 with a goal from Greco just under two minutes later. After the Crimson Hawks tied it at 2-2 on a Smith goal, the Dragons took a 4-2 lead with goals from Hamilton and Morgan Sherley. IUP then tied the game on Greco's second tally of the game at the 16:11-mark.
Nearly eight minutes later the Crimson Hawks took a 7-5 lead when Greco found the back of the net for the fourth time. After extending the IUP lead to 8-5, Tiffin retook the lead at 9-8 with a goal from Tori Nelson with 28 seconds to play in the half. Just 17 seconds later Smith tied the game at 9-9 right before the half.
In the second half IUP and Tiffin traded goals for most of the opening 10 minutes as Shields tied the game at 11-11 at the 20:45-mark on a feed from Smith. Sherley put Tiffin up 12-11 at the 16:59-mark before a goal by
Bri Chavis (Sykesville,Md./Century) knotted the game at 12-12 just 34 seconds later. The game remained tied at 12-12 for several minutes before Sherley put the Dragons on top 13-12 with a free position goal at the 8:49-mark. Tiffin added an insurance goal from Gina Abulone with just over four-minutes to play to provide the winning margin.
The game was evenly matched throughout as Tiffin held a slim 25-23 shot advantage, while IUP held a 21-20 shots on goal margin. The Dragons totaled 18 ground balls compared to the Crimson Hawks' 17 ground balls.
