INDIANA, Pa. –
Katie Martyn (Annapolis, Md./Archbishop Spalding) scored two goals and grabbed a career-high seven draw controls as she helped the 18th-ranked IUP women's lacrosse to a 10-7 win over visiting Slippery Rock under the lights at Miller Stadium on Wednesday.
It was the third straight win for IUP, which improved to 7-4 overall and into a three-way tie for first in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) with a 6-1 league record.
Martyn helped the Crimson Hawks control the pace of the game as they owned a 15-4 advantage on draw controls for the night. They also outshot The Rock 23-15 and picked up more ground balls – 21-17.
Nearly all of the scoring was done in the second half, as the Crimson Hawks took a 4-1 lead into halftime on the strength of a pair of goals from
Ally Burrows (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus).
IUP widened its gap to four with an early second half goal from
Riley Greenleaf (Lansdale, Pa./Springfield), but Slippery Rock (9-3, 4-3) with a pair of goals to cut its deficit to two with more than 24 minutes still left in the game.
Two goals is the closest The Rock would get, as each of their attempts to close the gap was answered with another IUP goal, including scores by Bri Chaves, Burrows, and Greenleaf in the final 15 minutes.
Hannah Bertolo (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) led the defensive effort with four caused turnovers and five ground balls.

The Crimson Hawks face their fifth ranked opponent of the year on Saturday, as they head out on the road to square off against 11th-ranked West Chester (8-3, 5-2). Game time is set for 2 p.m.
