INDIANA, Pa. – IUP softball recovered from a rough sixth inning in an 8-1 game one loss to defeat Mansfield 4-2 in the nightcap and pull off the doubleheader split at Podbielski Field on Friday.
Amanda Parrish (Dysart, Pa./Altoona) went a combined 4-for-4 and drew two walks while
Megan Risinger (Creekside, Pa./Marion Center) saw action in both games in the circle, giving up two earned over seven total innings pitched.
Today was the first of two important weekend series for the Crimson Hawks, who remained one game back of Mansfield in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Central standings with a 5-5 league record. They're also 13-14 overall.
Mansfield (18-8, 6-4) put together an eight-run sixth inning in game two, with two triples in the first three batters jumpstarting the huge inning. Starter
Lauren Zola (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seton-La Salle) had it going through five innings, striking out six while giving up just one hit over the first 15 outs.
IUP took a 1-0 lead into the inning, using good base running from Parrish along with a two-out infield error to score the game's first run.
In game two, the Crimson Hawks opened the scoring again with a
Mackenna Miller (Milton, Pa. /Milton) single up the middle scoring
Kassie Kesneck (Houston, Pa./Chartiers-Houston) in the second. Miller then scored on double off the bat of
Laura Cotter (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) to make it 2-0.
After Mansfield tied the game in the fifth, IUP retook the lead in the bottom half as
Bryanna Lonick (Burgettstown, Pa./Burgettstown) drew a bases loaded walk before Kesneck brought home another with a sacrifice fly to center.
Risinger started and went into the seventh inning, giving up nine hits and two earned runs. She picked up the win to move to 6-1.
Amanda Spindler (Brownsburg, Ind./Cathedral) earned the save in relief, tossing the final two outs.
