Several contribute in No. 19 IUP Women’s Lacrosse overtime win over No. 14 Mercyhurst

INDIANA, Pa. – Ally Burrows (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) scored the game-winning goal with 1:07 to play in overtime to lift 19th-ranked IUP women's lacrosse to a 14-13 extra time victory over 14th-ranked Mercyhurst on Tuesday afternoon at George P. Miller Stadium.

The win was huge when it comes to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) standings, as IUP moved back up into a tie for second place with a 7-2 league record. The Crimson Hawks are also 8-5 overall.

Burrows was one of four IUP players to score multiple goals, with Adriana Greco (Sound Beach, N.Y./Rocky Point) and Carissa Smith (East Brunswick, N.J./East Brunswick) each netting three, and Kim Hooven (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) scoring two.

Smith scored her third goal with 17 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 13-13. Goalie Angela Lontoc (Columbus, Ohio/Dublin Scioto) then saved a Mercyhurst free position with three seconds to go to push it to overtime.

Lontoc came up with another huge save with two seconds to play in the first overtime period, and then again 22 seconds later. The Crimson Hawks took advantage of their first full overtime possession, as Burrows scored the game-winner on a free position attempt.

Smith and Lontoc played huge roles on Tuesday, as Smith caused three turnovers and picked up three draw controls in addition to her season-high three goals. Lontoc saved a season-high 16 shots, including three in the final 4:56 of action.

Hannah Bertolo (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) led the defensive charge, posting season-highs of six caused turnovers and six ground balls.

IUP comes back from early deficit
Mercyhurst (8-4, 6-3) took a 3-0 lead midway through the first half, but the Crimson Hawks chipped away at their deficit and went into halftime trailing 6-4.

After a Mercyhurst goal opened the second half, IUP scored five straight goals to take a 9-7 lead. The Lakers fought back to tie the game at 11-11 with 6:04 to play, and later took a 13-12 lead with 1:36 on the clock before Smith's late game-tying score.
