Risinger's complete game earns IUP Softball doubleheader split with Bloomsburg

INDIANA, Pa. – The IUP softball team earned a doubleheader split with visiting Bloomsburg on Friday afternoon losing game one 9-5 before earning a 5-2 victory in game two at Podbielski Field.

With the split, the Crimson Hawks move to 19-16 overall and 8-6 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play. Meanwhile, the Huskies move to 22-14 behind a 12-2 league mark.

In game one, Seton Hill jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the second before IUP cut the lead in half on a Lauren Zola (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seton-La Salle) two-run double to right field in the bottom of the second. Bloomsburg then pushed the lead to 7-2 on a three-run home run from Holly Peacock. The Huskies then extended the lead to 9-2 on a two-run home run in the top of the sixth by Kelsey Impink. The Crimson Hawks got three back with a home run from shortstop Hannah Mercer (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg Area).

Mercer finished 1-for-4 with a home run and three RBI. Zola was 1-for-2 with two RBI and a double. Zola took the loss after pitching 4.0 innings while striking out six and allowing six earned runs.

Taylor Parker threw a complete game and struck out nine in earning the win for the Huskies.

In game two, IUP started the scoring with a Kaitlyn Beers (Reynoldsville, Pa./DuBois Area High School) solo home run to right field in the bottom of the third. The Crimson Hawks added to the lead with a pair of RBI doubles from Mackenna Miller (Milton, Pa. /Milton) and Laura Cotter (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) in the fourth. Mercer then added an RBI single in the fifth to push the lead to 5-0. Bloomsburg then scored a pair of runs in the top of the seventh on a single and a groundout.

Beers finished 2-for-3 with a home run and RBI. Miller was 2-for-3with a double, RBI and a run scored. Cotter was 1-for-3 with a double and RBI. IUP starting pitcher Megan Risinger (Creekside, Pa./Marion Center) threw a complete game while striking out four. She scattered five hits and allowed just two runs.

Bloomsburg starter Mallory Tomaschik suffered the loss after tossing 3.1 innings while allowing four hits, three runs and struck out four.

The Crimson Hawks continue PSAC play tomorrow when they travel to Clarion for a doubleheader with first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
