IUP Baseball posts second straight split with Seton Hill on Saturday

GREENSBURG, Pa. – Junior catcher Wes Carson (Woodstock, Md./Marriots Ridge) helped lead the IUP baseball team to a doubleheader split at Greensburg in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play on Saturday afternoon winning game one 3-2 before losing game two 5-4.

With the split, the Crimson Hawks move to 15-21 overall and 11-9 in PSAC play. Meanwhile, the Griffins move to 26-15 overall behind an 11-9 mark in league play.

Game one remained scoreless until the top of the fourth when IUP Matt Eperesi (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Mars) singled home Carson to take a 1-0 lead. Seton Hill answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 2-1 lead on an RBI double. In the sixth, Carson reached first on a one-out single. Anthony Rigous (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North), who was the next batter, then hit a two-run home run to provide the winning margin.

Carson was 1-for-2 with two runs scored and two walks. Rigous was 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Nate Dickey (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) was 2-for-4.
Junior starting pitcher Mike Klingensmith (Punxsutawney, Pa./Punxsutawney) threw a complete game in earning the win. He struck out seven while scattering four hits and allowing just two runs.

In game two, Seton Hill jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first before IUP tied the game as Cory Wheeler (Butler, Pa./Butler) scored from third on a wild pitch in the top of the third. The Griffins answered in the bottom half of the third as they plated three runs to take a 4-1 lead. A sac fly from Chris Eisel (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) and a Dickey RBI single cut the lead to 4-3 in the fourth.

The Crimson Hawks then tied the game at 4-4 in the fifth. Dan Sepic (York, Pa./Central York) led off with a single and then advanced to second on a bunt single from Scott Hess (Erie, Pa./Erie Cathedral Prep). Sepic and Hess then stole third and second, respectively. After Carson reached to load the bases, Rigous grounded into a double play that scored the tying run. Seton Hill then scored the winning run in the bottom of the fifth after Sam Vilk grounded into a double play.

Carson was 3-for-4 with a run scored. Sepic finished 3-for-4 with a double and a run. Dickey was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
