INDIANA, Pa. – The 20th-ranked Crimson Hawks forced 16th-ranked Lock Haven into 20 turnovers and a 22.2 shooting percentage in a dominant 9-4 victory on Friday afternoon at a snowy and windy George P. Miller Stadium.
10 different Crimson Hawks forced at least one turnover, while
Angela Lontoc (Columbus, Ohio/Dublin Scioto) saved 10 shots in goal as IUP improved to 5-4 overall and 4-1 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC).
Lock Haven (6-5, 3-3) came into the matchup as the third highest scoring team in the PSAC at 13.60 goals per game while shooting over 47 percent. The IUP defense mixed zone and man-to-man, as
Hannah Bertolo (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional),
Mollie Gallagher (Evans City, Pa./Seneca Valley), and
Ally Burrows (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) each caused three turnovers.
The Crimson Hawks also owned an advantage in draw controls 9-6, controlling possession down the stretch with seven draws in the second half alone.
Katie Martyn (Annapolis, Md./Archbishop Spalding) and
Kim Hooven (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) each had four draw controls in the game.
Burrows led the scoring effort with five points, scoring all four of her goals in the second half. Hooven was the main threat early on, scoring twice in the first nine minutes and adding a third goal with 1:29 left in the half to give IUP a 3-1 lead at halftime.
