INDIANA, Pa. – An exciting season-opener ended in heartbreak for IUP women's soccer, with an own goal in overtime giving the Crimson Hawks a 2-1 loss to Pitt-Johnstown on Thursday afternoon at South Campus Field.
The own goal came in the 91st minute, handing IUP just its second loss in the last 17 season opening matches.
Junior
Kallie Conte (Pittsburgh, Pa./Moon Area) scored the Crimson Hawks' lone goal, tying the score in the 64th minute with the assist credited to classmate
Gianna Parlavecchio (Florham Park, N.J./Hanover Park).
The goal answered a UPJ score in the 58th minute, as the Mountain Cats (1-0) got on the board first after a scoreless first half.
The Crimson Hawks outshot UPJ 17-6, although both teams finished with five shots on goal. Freshman
Madeline Smakulski (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg Area High School) finished with three saves in her collegiate debut.
