Hilliard and Smakulski help IUP Women’s Soccer to 1-0 upset win at East Stroudsburg

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – Sophomore Mya Hilliard (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) scored in the 33rd minute, which ended up being the deciding goal as the Crimson Hawks posted a 1-0 upset road victory over East Stroudsburg on Saturday afternoon at Eiler-Martin Stadium.

Hilliard's shot came from 22 yards out from the right wing, her first of the season, as IUP improved to 4-3 overall and 3-3 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC). The Crimson Hawks also tied East Stroudsburg (3-3, 3-2) with nine points in the league standings with today's win.

Freshman goalie Madeline Smakulski (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg Area High School) had her best performance of the year, shutting out the three-time defending conference champions with a season-high seven saves in the net.

The Warriors, who entered today's game averaging two goals per game, tallied 13 total shots on the afternoon, including four on goal by Monica Wood.

Hilliard's goal came after several minutes of IUP ball control, as the Crimson Hawks had four shots on good looks over a six-minute span in the first half. Hilliard's goal was the fifth shot of that sequence.

The one-goal differential was the Crimson Hawks' sixth in seven games this season, including each of the last four matches (2-2). IUP is outscoring opponents 7-5 on the year.
