IUP Women’s Soccer drops 1-0 home decision to Clarion

INDIANA, Pa. – An early goal by the Golden Eagles was enough as IUP lost to Clarion 1-0 in a defensive battle on South Campus Field in the hot sun on Friday afternoon.

The Crimson Hawks fall to 4-4 overall and 3-4 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) with the loss, and into a three-way tie for eighth place in the league with nine points. Four of IUP's nine remaining games come against teams higher in the conference standings.

Clarion's (4-4-1, 3-3-1 PSAC) goal came in the first minute, as McKenzie Sheesley scored on IUP goaltender Makenzie Witzel (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone). It was just the fourth goal in as many starts given up by Witzel, a freshman, this season.

The Crimson Hawks did have several scoring chances over the final 89 minutes, totaling 10 shots and seven corner kicks. Lexie Palluconi (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) and Gianna Parlavecchio (Florham Park, N.J./Hanover Park) attempted to tie the score early with shots in the sixth and seventh minutes, but both were turned away by Clarion's Krista Mosi. Megan Coyne (Fairview Park, Ohio/Fairview Park) then had a shot turned away by the Clarion defense in the 32nd minute, in what turned out to be IUP's last shot on goal.

IUP had four corner kicks and five more shots – none on goal – in the final 45 minutes.
