COLUMBUS, Ohio – Senior guard
Carolyn Appleby scored 23 points to lead all scorers in IUP's 72-50 exhibition basketball loss at Ohio State in Value City Arena Sunday afternoon.
Appleby shot 7-of-15 from the floor, made a 3-pointer, and went 8-of-9 from the foul line in 34 minutes of work against the defending Big Ten champions. She also had four rebounds, two assists and a steal.
She was one of two Crimson Hawks to reach double-figures in scoring, with junior newcomer
Natalie Myers adding 11 points to go along with a team-high seven rebounds.
IUP kept pace with the Buckeyes through the first half, forcing OSU to shoot just 36 percent in the first 20 minutes of action. The Crimson Hawks trailed by five at 31-26 at the break and outscored OSU 13-11 in the second quarter.
The Buckeyes pulled away in the third quarter with 24 points, as they shot better than 42 percent in the second half.

The Crimson Hawks officially open their 2018-19 season in two weeks when they host the PSAC/G-MAC Challenge at the Kovalchick Complex Nov. 10-11. IUP will play Alderson Broaddus Saturday at 2 p.m. and Ohio Valley Sunday at 3 p.m.

This was Appleby's second 20-point performance against a Division I team as she scored 20 points in IUP's 73-68 win over Pitt in an exhibition last year … Today's starting five included Appleby, Myers and
Lauren Wolosik at the guard spots,
Brittany Robinson and
Lexi Griggs in the post … All 12 available Crimson Hawks saw playing time … Robinson had six rebounds, two blocks and two steals … IUP held Ohio State to 4-of-20 from 3-point range … The Buckeyes held a turnover advantage of 23-9.
