No. 3 IUP Women’s Basketball scores 100-44 win over Cheyney on Education Day

INDIANA, Pa. – Five Crimson Hawks scored in double-figures to help third-ranked IUP women's basketball reach the century mark for the second time this year in a 100-44 win over visiting Cheyney Wednesday at the Kovalchick Complex.

It was the fifth annual Education Day game for the Crimson Hawks, who saw more than 1,000 in attendance with children from area schools including: Aquinas Academy, Blairsville-Saltsburg School District, Greater Johnstown Middle School, Johnstown Elementary, Homer Center School District, Indiana Area Jr. High School, Penns Manor School District, Seeds of Faith Christian Academy, Westmont School District, St. Bernard School, and several homeschools.

Senior guard Carolyn Appleby scored a game-high 20 points for the Crimson Hawks, who improved to 5-0 on the season with their fifth straight blowout victory. Appleby shot 7-of-14 from the floor, draining three 3-pointers, and went 3-of-4 from the foul line. She also had five assists, three rebounds and two steals in 31 minutes.

IUP got out to a hot start by scoring on its first six possessions to take a 14-2 lead less than three minutes into the game. The lead reached 20 points with 3:55 still to play in the first quarter and the Crimson Hawks went up 35-10 after 10 minutes of play.

The Crimson Hawks gave up just eight points to Cheyney in the second quarter and finished the first half with 60 points on their side of the scoreboard. They added 40 more points in the second half as a foul shot by freshman forward Rajah Fink with 21 seconds left gave IUP 100 and sent the visiting children into pandemonium.

Junior guard Natalie Myers dropped 15 points on the strength of four 3-pointers with senior forward Brittany Robinson adding 12 points on 6-of-8 shooting. Senior forward Kendall Hunter and junior forward Maura D'Anna each came off the bench and scored 12 points and 10 points, respectively.

Getting her first start for the injured Lauren Wolosik, senior guard Ana Hollen scored eight points and dished out six assists in 21 minutes of work.
