PEMBROKE, N.C. –
Chris Eisel (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) collected four hits and
Wes Carson (Woodstock, Md./Marriots Ridge) drove in three runs, but No. 21 UNC Pembroke generated too much offense as IUP baseball dropped its 2018 season-opening doubleheader Friday afternoon. The Crimson Hawks lost by scores of 11-3 and 7-6.
Eisel went 4-for-8 on the day with a double and a pair of runs scored, also stealing two bases on two attempts. Carson went 2-for-6, including a 2-run homerun in the opener, and scored two runs.
Game one: Pembroke 11, IUP 3
The Braves (4-0) scored all the runs they needed in the first inning, plating four runs on two hits. They added six more on five hits and an error in the second inning to open the game up early.
IUP scored two runs in the second on Carson's homer to left and brought another run home in the third with an RBI single to right by
Dan Sepic (York, Pa./Central York).
Starter
Jeff Allen (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg Area) gave up nine runs (seven earned) on five hits in 1.2 innings before giving way to
Alex Hart (State College, PA/The Kiski School) in the second. Hart tossed the final 4.1 innings, giving up two runs on three hits.
Game two: Pembroke 7, IUP 6
After giving up a first inning run to the Braves in game two, the Crimson Hawks took a 4-1 lead with a pair of runs in each the second and third innings.
Chris Calliari (Brockway, Pa./Brockway Area) made it a 5-1 game in the fourth with a
Chris Calliari (Brockway, Pa./Brockway Area) pinch hit homer to right.
Starter
Colin Claus (Oakdale, Pa./West Allegheny) struck out four in 3.0 innings, giving up one run on three hits. He gave way to reliever
Christian McClure (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) to start the fourth as Pembroke scored twice in the inning and three more times in the fifth to take a 6-5 lead.
IUP tied things back up in the sixth when
Anthony Rigous (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, but Pembroke scored the go-ahead run with a two-out single in the bottom half.
