IUP Baseball ends skid, Matt Swartz homer helps Crimson Hawks split with UPJ

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – A solo home run by Matt Swartz (Sarver PA/Freeport) in the sixth inning gave IUP a 3-2 victory in the nightcap as the Crimson Hawks split doubleheader baseball action with Pitt-Johnstown at Point Stadium Monday afternoon.

The victory put a halt to IUP's four-game losing streak and gave an exciting and positive end to the Pitt-Johnstown series, improving to 4-12 overall and 1-3 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC). The Mountain Cats (4-11, 3-1 PSAC) won the first game of the day by a score of 10-5.

Swartz finished the day a combined 3-for-6 with a double, that home run, RBI, and two runs scored. He also reached base once on a hit by pitch, one of four Crimson Hawks to get a free base that way Monday.

Each team scored a pair of runs in the first inning as the game looked to be another high-scoring affair. Cory Wheeler (Butler, Pa./Butler) scored IUP's first run on a wild pitch and Swartz crossed the plate four batters later on a throwing error by the UPJ shortstop.

Starter Brian Albert (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) allowed just three hits the rest of the way, tossing back-to-back 1-2-3 innings to keep UPJ off the board.

Albert picked up the win to improve to 2-0 on the year. He struck out seven and scattered six hits while allowing two earned runs in six innings. Christian McClure (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) earned the save after entering in the seventh in a tight spot. UPJ put a pair of runners on as McClure pitched out of a jam by getting two outs with a pair of runners in scoring position.

Game One: Pitt-Johnstown 10, IUP 5
The Mountain Cats got out to a 3-0 lead with a run in the second and two more in the third. The Crimson Hawks tied it in the fourth with an RBI double by Chris Calliari (Brockway, Pa./Brockway Area) and a two-run single off the bat of Chris Eisel (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin).

Both teams scored in the fifth and sixth innings before UPJ opened up its lead with four runs in the seventh to go on top by five runs and earn the win.

Alex Hart (State College, PA/The Kiski School) was credited with the loss on the mound with the Crimson Hawks committing four errors and were outhit 10-to-5.
