ERIE, Pa. –
Colin Claus (Oakdale, Pa./West Allegheny) posted a career-high 11 strikeouts in the opener, but his day was spoiled by a pair of IUP losses as the Crimson Hawks dropped both ends of a baseball doubleheader to ninth-ranked Mercyhurst Friday afternoon.
Mercyhurst scored wins of 3-2 in game one and 9-6 in game two. The Crimson Hawks fell to 4-14 overall and 1-5 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division. The Lakers are now 15-3 and 6-0.
Claus took the loss in game one despite his 11 K's in 6.0 innings of work. He scattered five hits, walked just one, and allowed three runs, two earned.
All of Mercyhurst's hits and runs came in the first three innings, as Claus shut down the Lakers 1-2-3 in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings.
Will Seymour (Ebensburg, Pa./Central Cambria) relieved him in the seventh and allowed a leadoff hit before retiring the next three batters in order.
The Crimson Hawks didn't get on the board until a wild seventh inning, as they came within one run of sending the game to extra innings.
The first four batters in the inning reached by either single or base on balls, as IUP scored a run and kept the bases loaded without any outs. Then, a drop by the Mercyhurst shortstop turned into a strange double play as the Lakers threw it around the infield to knock out a pair of IUP runners.
Matt Swartz (Sarver PA/Freeport) did score on the play to make it a 3-2 ballgame before a strikeout ended the IUP threat.
Game two was a higher scoring affair, as the two teams combined to plate at least one run in all seven innings.
The Crimson Hawks totaled 10 hits, including two each by
Chris Eisel (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) and
Chris Calliari (Brockway, Pa./Brockway Area).
Dom Farina (North Huntingdon, PA/Norwin) hit a two-run single in the second and
Cory Wheeler (Butler, Pa./Butler) had a three-run home run in the fourth inning that tied the game at 6-6.
The Lakers took the lead in the fifth and added insurance runs in the sixth and seventh innings.
