IUP Baseball splits doubleheader at No. 9 Mercyhurst

ERIE, Pa. – IUP's Chris Calliari (Brockway, Pa./Brockway Area) had a pinch hit, RBI double to spark a four-run seventh inning as the Crimson Hawks defeated No. 9 Mercyhurst 6-4 in the second game of today's divisional doubleheader in Erie.

The teams split Saturday's games as the Lakers came away with a 4-2 game one win, and took three of four in the weekend series. IUP is now 5-15 overall and 2-6 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division. Mercyhurst's loss today was its first divisional loss of the year.

Calliari's double tied the game at 3-3 with no outs in the top of the seventh. He advanced to third on a Cory Wheeler (Butler, Pa./Butler) double and then scored on a wild pitch to give IUP a 4-3 lead. Brock Bonadio (Connellsville, PA/Connellsville) and Wheeler later scored on a throwing error as IUP took a 6-3 lead to the bottom half.

Mercyhurst (16-4, 7-1) did manage one run off of reliever Christian McClure (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley), albeit on an infield throwing error. He rebounded by fanning the final two Lakers to get the win.

McClure was part of an IUP bullpen that struck out nine batters and allowed one run on four hits over the final four innings. McClure had five of those strikeouts while Dan Roan (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) fanned four of the six batters he faced in the fourth and fifth innings.

IUP scored a pair of runs in the first inning with the help of a Bonadio RBI single down the right field line. Mercyhurst tied the game with two runs of its own in the bottom half and took a 3-2 lead in the fourth inning.

In the opener, the Crimson Hawks dug themselves a hole as Mercyhurst took a 4-0 lead after two innings. They got on the board in the sixth, taking advantage of an error to plate a pair to make it 4-2 before ultimately falling by the same score.

Up next
The Crimson Hawks will play the Altoona Curve – the Double-A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates – in an exhibition game Monday afternoon. Then they'll head to Ohio for a doubleheader against Walsh in North Canton Tuesday.
