INDIANA, Pa. – Junior
Ally Burrows (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) scored a career-high eight goals, but 19th-ranked IUP women's lacrosse fell victim to a late Slippery Rock goal in a 16-15 loss Wednesday evening at a rainy Miller Stadium.
Burrows' eight scores are the second most in single game IUP history, one shy of tying Jackie Rutkowski's nine goals in a win over Slippery Rock in 2007.
The loss was the second straight for the Crimson Hawks as they fell to 4-2 overall and 1-2 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC). Slippery Rock is now 5-2 and 1-2.
IUP took a 6-1 lead after 19 minutes of play, but Slippery Rock battled back with five straight goals to tie things up with 1:48 before half. Burrows scored her fourth goal of the half on a free position attempt with 14 seconds to go, giving IUP a 7-6 lead heading into halftime.
Both teams took turns at the lead in the second half, with the Crimson Hawks going on top 14-13 with 8:08 to play after three straight goals over a two minute span.
Slippery Rock regained the lead at 15-14 than four minutes later with a pair of goals, the latter of which was a free position attempt. It was one of six free position goals for The Rock in the game, including four in the second half.
The Crimson Hawks tied the game again as Burrows' netted her eighth of the game on a free position shot with 3:35 left.
IUP picked up the ensuing draw, but turned it over before regaining possession with 1:31 to play. Another turnover followed 18 seconds later and Slippery Rock capitalized on another free position attempt with the eventual game-winner with 47.6 seconds left. The Rock picked up the draw control and ran out the clock for the victory.
Adriana Greco (Sound Beach, N.Y./Rocky Point) scored three goals, all on free position attempts.
Riley Greenleaf (Lansdale, Pa./Springfield) added a pair of goals while
Katie Martyn (Annapolis, Md./Archbishop Spalding) and
Victoria Kerkovich (Ocean City, MD/Stephen Decator) both scored one apiece.
