IUP Softball splits doubleheader at Bloomsburg

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Kaitlyn Beers (Reynoldsville, Pa./DuBois Area High School) hit a pair of doubles and drove in four runs as the IUP softball team defeated Bloomsburg 11-9 in the opening game of a Friday afternoon doubleheader at Jan Hutchinson Field.

The Crimson Hawks won game one in exciting fashion, breaking a tie with a pair of runs in the seventh inning. Megan Risinger (Creekside, Pa./Marion Center) then pitched out of a slight jam in the bottom half to secure the IUP victory.

The 11 runs and 13 hits in Friday's game one tied single game-highs for the Crimson Hawks.

After Bloomsburg got on the board in the first inning, IUP came back with four runs in the second on RBI base hits from Kassie Kesneck (Houston, Pa./Chartiers-Houston), Alaina Montgomery (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) and Beers. With the game tied at 4-4 in the fourth, IUP scored three on an RBI single by Megan Little (Harrison City, Pa./Penn Trafford) and RBI groundout by Lauren Goetz (Cleveland, Ohio/Cuyahoga Heights).

The Crimson Hawks then took a 9-5 lead in the sixth as Beers knocked in a pair on her second double of the day.

Bloomsburg put up four runs in the bottom half to tie the game at 9-9.

The teams split Friday's doubleheader, with Bloomsburg winning the second game 4-3 with a walk-off double in the seventh. The Crimson Hawks are now 8-10 overall and 2-4 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Central Division. Bloomsburg is now 12-15 and 4-6.

With the Crimson Hawks trailing 3-1 in the sixth inning of game two, Amanda Parrish (Dysart, Pa./Altoona) tied things up with one swing, bringing home Montgomery and Beers with a double to left.
