No. 21 IUP Women’s Lacrosse suffers disheartening loss at No. 23 Lock Haven

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Kelly Shields (Grasonville, Md./Kent Island) scored seven points, spearheading a comeback that ultimately fell short as the 21st-ranked IUP women's lacrosse team lost to 23rd-ranked Lock Haven 14-13 Tuesday evening.

Shields tied a season-best with three goals and added four assists.

With the loss, the Crimson Hawks drop to 8-4 overall and 5-4 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC). The matchup included two of three teams tied for fifth in the league standings, as Lock Haven improves to 10-4 overall and 6-3 in the conference.

IUP is now tied with Bloomsburg for sixth in the conference with the two teams set to square off Saturday. The top six teams at the end of the regular season advance to the PSAC tournament. IUP has three games left on its schedule.

With the game tied early in the first half, Lock Haven scored five straight goals to take an 8-3 lead just past the midway point.

Adriana Greco (Sound Beach, N.Y./Rocky Point) scored with 11:35 to play to stop the Lock Haven run, and scored two more times in the next nine minutes as the Crimson Hawks went on a 5-2 run to end the half. Shields assisted on the final two goals of the half with Lock Haven taking a 10-8 lead after 30 minutes.

Greco scored a team-best four goals and added an assist for five points.

Shields then went on a scoring spree early in the second half, tallying three straight goals over a 3:37 span to give IUP a 12-10 lead with 22 minutes to play. Lock Haven responded with three straight goals to take a 13-12 lead before Ally Burrows (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) tied it up at 13-all at 6:33 with her third goal of the game.

An IUP turnover with four minutes to go led to the eventual game-winning goal with 3:41 to play.

The Crimson Hawks had two more chances in the final minutes, but shots by Katie Martyn (Annapolis, Md./Archbishop Spalding) and Burrows either hit the post or were saved, and Lock Haven bled out the rest of the clock to clinch the win.
