BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Despite a record-breaking day by
Katie Martyn (Annapolis, Md./Archbishop Spalding), the IUP women's lacrosse team fell to Bloomsburg 11-9 in a key conference matchup Saturday afternoon.
The two teams came into the game tied for fifth in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) standings. Bloomsburg broke that tie with the win and is now 10-5 overall and 6-4 in the conference. The Crimson Hawks are 8-5 overall and now tied with Millersville for seventh in the league at 5-5.
The top six teams earn berths in the PSAC tournament.
Martyn picked up eight draw controls, increasing her season total to 94 to break the program record. The old record was set by Stephanie Bianco, who had 92 during the 2012 season.
Martyn is second in the PSAC this year averaging 7.23 draw controls per game.
The Crimson Hawks struck first with a
Riley Greenleaf (Lansdale, Pa./Springfield) goal less than one minute into the game. Bloomsburg responded with three straight goals, and scored six of the next seven to take a 6-2 lead. IUP trailed 7-4 at the half.
They again opened the scoring in the second half as
Kelly Shields (Grasonville, Md./Kent Island) scored to cut IUP's deficit to 7-5. The gteams traded goals the rest of the way, as the Crimson Hawks making it an 11-9 game with 3:43 to play on a goal by
Adriana Greco (Sound Beach, N.Y./Rocky Point). That's the closest they'd get, however, in the 2-goal loss.
Up next
The Crimson Hawks will need to win out for a chance at the postseason. They'll host Seton Hill (4-10, 3-7) in their regular season finale Wednesday night. Game time is 7 p.m.
