INDIANA, Pa. –
Lauren Zola (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seton-La Salle) picked up a win and a save in the circle, and
Alaina Montgomery (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) ended the day with a diving grab in center field as the IUP softball team swept a divisional doubleheader with Mansfield Friday at Ruth Podbielski Field.
The Crimson Hawks won by scores of 9-1 (five innings) and 5-3 to improve to 14-10 overall and 8-4 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Central Division. They've now won six games in a row, tied for the longest active win streak in the conference.
Nine different IUP players combined for 21 hits on the afternoon, with
Kaitlyn Beers (Reynoldsville, Pa./DuBois Area High School) finishing 4-for-7 with a home run and three runs batted in.
Amanda Parrish (Dysart, Pa./Altoona),
Lauren Goetz (Cleveland, Ohio/Cuyahoga Heights),
Megan Little (Harrison City, Pa./Penn Trafford), and
Kassie Kesneck (Houston, Pa./Chartiers-Houston) each had three hits in the doubleheader.
IUP had 12 of those hits in game one, including five in a 5-run fifth inning that clinched a mercy win. The game-winner came off the bat of Beers, driving a single to left to score
Lauren Goetz (Cleveland, Ohio/Cuyahoga Heights).
Zola got the complete game win in the opener, giving up one earned run on just two hits with a pair of strikeouts. She earned the save in game two, tossing a scoreless and hitless seventh inning.
With runners on first and second and no outs, the Crimson Hawks picked up a big play as a Mansfield bunt popped up to
Renee Wall (Topton, PA/Brandywine Heights) at third base, who doubled up the runner at first. The next batter lined a sinking liner to center, but a charging Montgomery laid out and made a game-saving play to wrap up the sweep.
IUP trailed 3-1 in the second game before tying it in the fourth with an RBI single by Little and a sac fly by
Alaina Laverick (Clymer, Pa./Penns Manor). The Crimson Hawks then took the lead in the fifth, with Kesneck scoring from third on a wild pitch and Parrish doubling in Beers.
