LOCK HAVEN, Pa. –
Kaitlyn Beers hit a three-run home run in the seventh inning of a 4-3 game one loss as the IUP softball team got back to action with a doubleheader at Lock Haven Sunday. The Crimson Hawks also dropped game two by a score of 9-2.
The games were the first for IUP in more than three weeks as several games have been postponed or cancelled due to cold and wet weather, causing poor field conditions at several campuses. The Crimson Hawks are 6-8 overall and 0-2 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Central Division.
Beers' homer came with two outs and drove in
Alaina Montgomery and
Jo Jo McLay. That was the final threat for the Crimson Hawks, however, as a strikeout ended the game and the comeback attempt.
Montgomery and Beers were nearly the entire IUP offense, combining for five hits and two runs scored from the 2-3 spots in the order.
Lauren Zola got the ball in game one, taking the loss after striking out four and giving up three earned runs through six innings.
The Crimson Hawks got out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning of game two, with
Olivia Gregorich and
Alaina Laverick getting base hits to drive in a pair of runs.
Lock Haven (15-9, 4-0) tied the game in the third and opened up a big lead in the fifth inning with seven runs on five hits. The Crimson Hawks managed one more base runner the rest of the way before a double play ended the game in the seventh.
Up next
The Crimson Hawks have four game dates on the schedule this week as they look to make up for some lost time. They'll head to Mansfield Monday for another divisional doubleheader. First pitch is 2:30 p.m.
