Crimson Hawks total nine extra base hits in doubleheader split at Mansfield

MANSFIELD, Pa. – Megan Little (Harrison City, Pa./Penn Trafford) blasted a grand slam in the opener and Renee Wall (Topton, PA/Brandywine Heights) had four doubles in IUP softball's doubleheader split with Mansfield Monday afternoon. The Crimson Hawks won game one 9-5 and lost 3-2 in the night cap.

The Crimson Hawks now stand at 7-9 overall and 1-3 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Central Division after the day.

Little's only hit of the day helped spur the comeback win, blasting a towering drive over the fence in left center in the fourth inning to tie the game at 5-5.

Now with the momentum, the Crimson Hawks added to their lead with runs in each of the next three innings. Wall gave IUP a 6-5 lead with an RBI double in the fifth, followed by a Kassie Kesneck (Houston, Pa./Chartiers-Houston) solo homer in the sixth, and an RBI double off the bat of Amanda Parrish (Dysart, Pa./Altoona) in the seventh, scoring a pair.

Freshman Brooklyn Kotula (Ambridge, Pa./Ambridge) was vital in relief, shutting Mansfield down with the Crimson Hawks trailing 5-1 in the third. She tossed 1-2-3 innings in the fourth and fifth before exiting in the sixth. Kotula was credited with the win, giving up one hit in three innings with no earned runs.

Mansfield (6-5, 4-2) threatened in its half of the sixth, loading the bases with two down until Megan Risinger (Creekside, Pa./Marion Center) entered in the circle and got the final out to get out of the jam.

Wall finished 3-for-4 with two doubles, an RBI and run scored.

IUP loses lead late in game two defeat
The Crimson Hawks struck first in the nightcap with a run-scoring single by Parrish in the second inning. They went on top by a score of 2-0 with another RBI single by Parrish in the fourth.

Risinger started and gave up eight hits, stranding Mansfield runners in the first, second, fifth and sixth innings. The Mounties rallied in the seventh with three straight singles to load the bases with no outs. A sacrifice fly brought one run in, and two batters later a double to right center scored the tying and game-winning runs.

IUP totaled six hits in game two, including four doubles. Wall went 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles and two runs scored.
