Crimson Hawks wrap up weekend in California

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – In what was the toughest opening weekend for IUP women's volleyball in recent history, the Crimson Hawks wrapped up the Cougar Classic with a pair of three-set losses to sixth-ranked Lewis and Cal State Dominguez Hill Saturday afternoon.

Lewis won by scores of 25-16, 25-21, and 25-16, and Dominguez Hills took the match by scores of 25-23, 25-18 and 25-16.

Freshman Kylie Osborn was IUP's high scorer on the day, totaling 19 kills and 20.5 points in the six sets. Her high of 11 kills on 24 attacks (.375) against sixth-ranked Lewis was the most by any Crimson Hawks player during the weekend.

Despite a rough opening set loss to Lewis, IUP grabbed early momentum in the second with Lexi Hraga serving the Crimson Hawks into a 7-0 lead. Lewis battled back and chipped away to eventually go on top 11-10. It was close the rest of the way, with IUP trailing 23-21 before Lewis scored the final two points to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

IUP's opening set with Dominguez Hills was a roller coaster that included 10 ties and four lead changes before CSUDH broke a 23-23 tie for a two-point win.

Marut named to All-Tournament Team
Senior libero Jess Marut was named to the Cougar Classic All-Tournament Team, totaling 54 digs with an average of 4.50 digs per set. She added three service aces and seven assists.

Marut also passed Sarah Rosenberry (2001-04) and moved into second place in IUP history in career digs over the weekend. She now has 1,789 for her career and trails first place Emily Pany (2007-10) who totaled 2,670.

Cougar Classic
The Crimson Hawks finished their weekend 0-4, including losses to a pair of top-10 teams in sixth-ranked Lewis and eighth-ranked Nebraska Kearney.
