INDIANA, Pa. - The IUP women's soccer team (6-5-0, 5-5-0 PSAC West) fell to the Edinboro Fighting Scots (8-2-2, 8-0-2 PSAC) in double overtime by by a score of 3-2 on on Wednesday night. Due to the inclement weather earlier in the day, the Crimson Hawks and Fighting Scots were forced to play the match in the less familiar surroundings of the Indiana Area Senor High School, at a later than anticipated kick off time of 7:00 pm. Despite these potential challenges, and twice going behind a goal, the Crimson Hawks managed to rally on two occasions and force the division leading Fighting Scots to double overtime, before eventually succumbing to a late goal.
How it Happened
>> The crimson Hawks have made scoring early goals a bit of a habit this season, and they almost continued that trend on Wednesday night against the Fighting Scots. Just five minutes into the match
Mahogany Willis forced a save out of the Edinboro goalkeeper to earn IUP its first corner of the game.
>> The game soon evolved into a midfield battle as slick conditions made it hard for either side to grab control of the match.
>> The Fighting Scots would get their first real chance of the game in the 20th minute when IUP Goalkeeper
Madeline Smakulski was forced to tip a long shot from over the bar.
>> Unfortunately, Smakulski would be unable to stop the next major chance for the Fighting Scots when in the 31st minute Rebecca Manns unleashed an unstoppable drive into the top corner of the IUP net to give Edinboro the lead.
>> That lead would not last long though, as the Crimson Hawks struck back eight minutes later.
Gia Martyn beat several Edinboro defenders before splitting the remaining members of the Edinboro defense with a pass to
Mahogany Willis. Willis would then slide the ball past the on rushing Edinboro goalkeeper to draw IUP level.
>> The Crimson Hawks would the suffer a major scare in the 57th minute when an Edinboro forward broke free for a break away, but freshman defender
Cassidy Zandier showed a great burst of pace to recover the distance and make a potential goal saving tackle before she could test Smakulski in the IUP net.
>> The Fighting Scots would retake the lead in the 65th minute with a helping hand from the weather. Mary Sinan fired in a free kick which skipped along the wet turf forcing Smakulski to parry the ball with her save. The rebound from the shot fell kindly to Edinboro forward Ashley Bayer to tuck home.
>> Undeterred, the Crimson Hawks once again rally to restore parity just five minutes later. This time it was IUP who profited off a set piece, as
Makenzie Witzel's free kick eventually found its way to Sammy Joyce in front of the Edinboro net to blast home the equalizer for the Crimson Hawks.
>> The Crimson Hawks were then forced to make a change due to injury, with goalkeeper
Maria Tunney coming in to replace Smakulski in the IUP net. Tunney would then be called upon to keep the Cirmson Hawks in the match, as she made a fantasic kick save in the 83rd minute to deny an Edinboro forward one on one.
>> The two sides would remain scoreless for the rest of regulation, necessitating IUP's second overtime game of the season.
>> While neither team was able to make a breakthrough in the first period of overtime, in the third minute of the second period of overtime the Fighting Scots were able to score the winning goal off of a Brittnie Spithaler goal following a scramble in the IUP 18 yard box.
