INDIANA, Pa. – The sixth-ranked Crimson Hawks had their best offensive performance of the season with six reaching double-figures in scoring as IUP defeated visiting Felician 91-70 Saturday afternoon at the Kovalchick Complex.
The 91 points were a season-high for the Crimson Hawks, who shot 50.7 percent from the field and hit 10 3-pointers. They also turned it over just seven times, a season-low.
Sophomore guard
Dave Morris keyed the offensive attack with a season-high 17 points to lead the way for IUP, shooting 6-of-10 from the field with three 3-pointers and four steals in 32 minutes.
Morris opened the day with a trey and two minutes later had a coast-to-coast steal and layup for a quick 6-0 lead. It was the first of several leads that IUP built in the early going that were quickly answered by Felician (2-4). The Golden Eagles cut that IUP lead to one at 9-8 and later cut into a 17-10 deficit with back-to-back 3-pointers at the midway point of the half.
The Crimson Hawks answered those treys with a 16-4 run, including 10 straight points that gave them a 33-20 lead with five minutes left in the half. Junior guard
Anthony White provided the spark, scoring two early buckets in the paint off the bench.
White went on to score 10 points in just eight first half minutes and finished the day with 11.
Felician got right back into the game with three 3-pointers over a 1:21 time span but IUP again stretched its lead to double-figures before taking a 43-34 lead into halftime.
Another 10 straight points early in the second half, including back-to-back layups by senior guard
Malik Miller, pushed IUP's lead to 55-40. Later a 3-pointer by freshman forward
Ethan Porterfield gave IUP its biggest lead up to that point at 58-42 before the first media timeout of the half.
The Crimson Hawks' lead stayed in double-figures the rest of the afternoon, using runs of 10-2 and 11-2 to lead by as many as 24 points en route to the 21-point victory.
Other top scorers for IUP included Miller with 16 points, sophomore guard
Armoni Foster with 12, senior forward
Chucky Humphries and junior guard
Shawndale Jones with 11 each.
It was the last action of November for the Crimson Hawks, who finished the month with a 6-0 record. It's the fifth time in the last seven years IUP has opened the year with six straight wins or better.
