INDIANA, Pa. – Senior
Ally Burrows scored six goals and broke the IUP career record as the Crimson Hawks defeated visiting Findlay 17-5 Saturday afternoon. The win gave new head coach
Brenna Gallagher a win in her first game back at her alma mater.
Burrows entered her final season with 162 goals, five short of former IUP All-American
Alexa Lodovici's 167.
The Crimson Hawks jumped out to an early lead with three straight goals over a 3:16 time frame. Burrows was responsible for two of those goals, with her second coming on a free position attempt. Two of Burrows' six goals came on free positions, while the Crimson Hawks saw five of their scores come after penalties.
Findlay (0-2) rallied to keep things close in the early going as IUP led by a score of 4-3 midway through the first half.
The Crimson Hawks then scored three straight goals, including two from Burrows to take a more comfortable 7-3 lead before the break.
The momentum continued into the second half with goals by Martyn and
Kathryn Zeiler. Then a 5-0 run by the Crimson Hawks gave them a 14-4 lead with 13 minutes to play and kept the clock running.
Burrows posted her record-breaking goal during the run, with her sixth goal of the day giving IUP that 10-goal lead. Burrows scored twice on the run, with Martyn (2) and Zeiler adding scores.
IUP tacked on a few insurance goals down the stretch for the easy season-opening win.
