PEMBROKE, N.C. — Crimson Hawks' bats came alive early in game two as IUP splits the doubleheader with UNC-Pembroke in their 2019 season-opener Saturday afternoon at Sammy Cox Field in Pembroke, N.C.
Jeff Allen earned his first win of the season after allowing just one earned run on three hits with seven strikeouts and two walks, over 5.0 innings. The seven strikeouts marked his most since fanning eight batters on April 8, 2017 at Clarion.
The Crimson Hawks handed UNCP their first loss of the season by defeating the Braves 11-1 in the second game of the doubleheader after falling 9-7 in the first contest.
IUP started the second game off strong by scoring two runs in the first inning.
Colin Williams followed with a two-run home run in the second inning, increasing the Crimson Hawks' lead to 4-1. IUP scored one run over the next three frames, a homer to left field from
Ty Diehl, before scoring three runs in the sixth.
Chris Eisel capped off the explosive IUP offense with a three-run homer to left field in the seventh inning.
The Crimson Hawks were the first to get on the board in game one after
Luke Hollander drew a walk with the bases loaded.
Nick Hess followed with a two-run single, increasing IUP's lead to 3-0 in the second inning. The score went back-and-forth through the first four innings with each team scoring three runs in the second inning and then two runs in the third. The Braves took the lead in the bottom of the fifth by scoring three runs off IUP fielding errors.
Williams combined to go 5-for-9 with a run and two RBI over both games, while four other Crimson Hawks recorded multi-hit efforts. Eisel went a combined 4-for-9 with a team-best four RBI. He extended his overall hitting streak to 15 games, dating back to April 22, 2018.
