IUP Baseball drops pair to Winston-Salem State Sunday

ASHEBORO, N.C. – Chris Eisel had three extra base hits and drove in four combined runs but Winston-Salem State was too much for the Crimson Hawks as they dropped both ends of a double-header by scores of 4-3 and 9-5 Sunday.

Eisel had his big performance in the game two loss, finishing 3-for-4 with two doubles, a home run and three runs batted in. He scored four total times on the day and also stole a base.

The Crimson Hawks dropped to 3-6 overall, including 1-3 on their spring break road trip.

IUP outhit Winston-Salem State (13-7) 20-to-17 with six extra base hits on the day, but nine free passes, four errors and two hit batters swung the tides in favor of the Rams.

Pitcher Brian Albert started game one for the Crimson Hawks, striking out six batters while giving up six hits and just one walk in 5.1 innings. The Rams did all of their damage early on, scoring in the second, third and fourth innings to take a 4-2 lead.

Just two of Albert's four runs allowed were earned as the Crimson Hawks committed four errors in game one.

IUP scored a pair of runs in the fourth on RBI singles from Eisel and Colin Williams. Its deficit was cut to one in the sixth when Eisel scored when Austin Mueller reached on an error with one out. The Crimson Hawks later loaded the bases but a strikeout ended the threat.

In game two, Winston-Salem State scored five runs in the first inning before the Crimson Hawks bounced back with four in the second. Nick Hess led off the inning with a homer, with Eisel later knocking in two more runs on a double. He scored on a Williams' double, who was thrown out at home after a single Mueller to end the frame.

The Rams added three more runs in the fourth and one in the fifth. Both teams left eight runner stranded.
