SALISBURY, N.C. – Five different Crimson Hawks went yard Tuesday afternoon as IUP baseball split its doubleheader at Catawba, winning 8-5 and losing 11-3.
Three of those home runs came in the game one victory that saw the Crimson Hawks pile up 11 total base hits.
Ben Teplin had the first blast of the day with a solo shot to lead off the top of the second inning.
Chris Eisel came next with a 2-run homer to left in the fourth inning that gave the Crimson Hawks a 4-0 lead.
Starter
Billy Welsh tossed a hitless first three innings, getting out of a jam in the first before putting together a near perfect second and third.
Catawba (20-7) did get on the board in the bottom of the fourth with a pair of runs on three hits, cutting IUP's lead to 4-2. That changed in the fifth when IUP put four on the board highlighted by an
Anthony Rota 3-run homer to give the Crimson Hawks a commanding 8-2 lead.
Rota finished 3-for-3 and scored twice, with Eisel and
Nick Hess each adding two hits.
The Indians added two runs in the sixth and one more in the seventh off reliever
Nick Kuhn.
In game two, Catawba jumped out to an early lead with four in the second inning. IUP homered twice in the fourth on solo shots by
Matt Swartz and
Luke Hollander, but the Indians scored five times in the bottom half to take a 9-2 lead.
The Crimson Hawks scored once more with an RBI single by
Austin Vigliotti in the sixth inning.

The Crimson Hawks (4-7) finish up their 8-game road swing with a doubleheader Wednesday at Glenville State (1-8). First pitch of the opener has been moved up one hour to noon.
