Box Score 2 GLENVILLE, W.Va. – IUP baseball piled up 26 hits and received contributions from six different pitchers as the Crimson Hawks swept Glenville State by scores of 9-7 and 10-3 Wednesday afternoon.
Nick Hess went a combined 5-9 with a homer and five runs batted in and the Crimson Hawks wrapped up their spring break trip with their first doubleheader sweep of the season.
IUP heads back home with a 6-7 overall record and begin Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play next weekend.
The game one win went to extra innings tied at 7-7. In the ninth,
Colin Williams reached on a one-out error and advanced to second on the throw.
Markus Cestra drew a walk to put two on and two batters later
Austin Vigliotti knocked in the go-ahead run as Williams scored from second. Cestra moved to third on the play and then scored another run on a passed ball.
In the bottom half, Glenville State hit a leadoff single off reliever
Nick Kuhn. A pair of ground ball outs followed before Kuhn struck out the Pioneers' No. 2 hitter to clinch the win.
Kuhn picked up the win in relief, giving up one earned run on one hit with two strikeouts in 3.0 innings pitched.
Ben Hudock went the first 3.2 innings and struck out six with just one earned run.
Hess went 3-5 with an RBI.
Chris Eisel and
Matt Swartz each had two hits and a home run.
In game two, the Crimson Hawks jumped up early with runs in the first two innings to take a 7-1 lead. Hess hit a 3-run shot in the first, with Eisel, Williams, Hess and
Luke Hollander each knocking in a run in the second.
IUP added insurance runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings for the easy win.
Colin Claus started on the hill, striking out six with two runs allowed in three innings of work. Three relievers combined to pitch the last four innings, with
Jeff Allen striking out four in the final two innings.
Up next
The Crimson Hawks open PSAC West play with a 4-game series against Cal U Friday and Saturday, March 22-23. IUP is set to host the Vulcans Friday and head to California the following day. The Vulcans are currently 10-2.
