IUP Women’s Lacrosse holds off Wingate for 14-11 win in North Carolina

WINGATE, N.C. – Ally Burrows and Chloe Borland each scored four goals and the Crimson Hawks held off a second half rally from host Wingate for a 14-11 road win Sunday afternoon.

Borland scored three goals and assisted on another in the second half as IUP matched Wingate's nine goals to hold off the comeback.

The Crimson Hawks improved to 2-1 with the win in their first action in two weeks. It's the first of two games in the Carolinas over three days.

In an evenly played game, the difference came from IUP's late first half run and its ability to put the ball on net.

The Crimson Hawks broke a 2-2 tie with three goals in the last three minutes of the opening frame, including back-to-back scores by Burrows as they took a 5-2 lead into the break.

Wingate (2-4) outscored the Crimson Hawks 4-3 in the first 12 minutes of the second half, with a free position goal cutting IUP's lead to 8-6.

With the Crimson Hawks still on top by two at 9-7 minutes later, goals by Chelsea Johnston and Katie Martyn extended the lead to give IUP breathing room with 10 minutes to play. From there, each team traded goals with Borland scoring twice and Burrows netting her fourth with two minutes to play.

Lauren Piecknick and Carly Mansur shared time in the net, stopping a combined eight shots.

Up next
It's a quick turnaround for the Crimson Hawks, who will play No. 12 Limestone (5-1) Tuesday, March 12. This will be the second top 25 opponent for IUP this season. Limestone is coming off a 22-0 win over Chowan Saturday.
