INDIANA, Pa. –
Ally Burrows scored five goals but a late second half rally fell short for IUP women's lacrosse as they lost to Mercyhurst 20-15 Tuesday afternoon at George P. Miller Stadium.
Shannon Hartigan and
Kathryn Zeiler added four goals apiece in the loss that dropped the Crimson Hawks to 3-3 on the year and 1-1 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play.
The scoring went back-and-forth in the early going with the teams tied at 3-3 after Hartigan's first goal at the 17:31 mark. The Lakers (4-2, 1-1 PSAC) then scored three straight goals and outscored IUP 5-3 before the half to take an 8-6 lead into the break.
Mercyhurst scored eight of the first 10 goals of the second half to take a 16-8 lead before the Crimson Hawks started their comeback at the midway point.
Hartigan and Burrows went back-to-back within three minutes of each other and after another Mercyhurst goal, Zeiler and Burrows combined for four scores to close the gap to 17-14 with eight minutes to play.
The Lakers ended IUP's comeback hopes, however, scoring three goals in the final 5:34 to come away with the win.
