Crimson Hawks split high-scoring doubleheader with Clarion

INDIANA, Pa. – Ben Teplin had four hits and Colin Williams drove in five runs as the Crimson Hawks split a home doubleheader with Clarion Thursday afternoon at Dougherty Field.

IUP took game one 11-9 while Clarion came back to win game two 9-5.

The teams combined for 41 hits in the doubleheader, including 16 that went for extra bases. The Crimson Hawks finished with six doubles and a pair of home runs while Clarion went deep five times on the day.

Teplin was one of seven Crimson Hawks with multiple hits in the doubleheader. Williams had two hits, including one of IUP's two home runs. Matt Swartz joined him, as they were responsible for driving in five runs in the fourth inning of the first game.

That inning followed a 4-run third that saw Swartz and Scott Hess hit RBI doubles while Teplin knocked in two with a single down the left field line.

IUP (10-24, 4-14) led 11-4 in the seventh inning when Clarion put a rally together. The Golden Eagles started the frame with three singles, using an error to help score a run, before smashing a 3-run homer. Clarion had three more singles, scored another run, and had the go-ahead run at the plate before Nick Kuhn got a foul pop up for the third out.

Colin Claus earned the win on the mound, striking out six and giving up four runs in six innings.

Clarion (16-22, 6-12) hit three of its homers in game two, including a 3-run blast in the first inning to jump out to an early lead.

IUP scored twice in the second and three more times in the third to take a 5-3 lead. A solo Clarion homer in the fifth cut the deficit to one and another 3-run shot in the sixth gave the Golden Eales the lead for good.
