Crimson Hawks hit three homers in split with Clarion at Butler

BUTLER, Pa. – Chris Eisel hit his 10th home run of the season, one of three for the Crimson Hawks on the day as they split a divisional doubleheader with Clarion Saturday at Pullman Park in Butler.

Eisel homered in IUP's 8-3 game two victory. Clarion took game one by a score of 3-2.

The 10 home runs is the most by an IUP player since Ryan Uhl hit 29 and Austin Mock had 16 during the Crimson Hawks' high-powered 2015 season.

Eisel's homer to left led off the game and helped the Crimson Hawks score runs in each of the first three innings to take a 6-2 lead. Nick DiAndreth had a pair of RBI base hits and Matt Swartz led off the third inning with a solo shot of his own.

IUP added two insurance runs in the seventh on a double from Luke Hollander and another RBI single by DiAndreth.

DiAndreth finished the game 3-for-4 with four runs batted in. Eisel and Swartz each had a pair of hits to go along with their home runs.

Ben Hudock earned the win in relief for the Crimson Hawks, giving up just one run on three hits and striking out four over the final 4.2 innings of work.

Pitching took center stage in the opener with IUP starter Brian Albert and Clarion's Kyler Mellott keeping the game scoreless through four innings. The Crimson Hawks broke that scoreless tie in the fifth when Jake Cherry blasted a 2-run homer to left field.

Clarion came back to tie the game with two runs on three hits off Albert in the sixth, with Nick Kuhn coming in to get the final out and strand two Golden Eagles on the bases.

Clarion won the game in the seventh, as a lead-off single led to an RBI walk-off base hit two batters later.

These two teams split their four-game series, with the Crimson Hawks taking one at home in Thursday's doubleheader. IUP is now 11-25 overall and 5-15 in PSAC West play after the Clarion series.

Up next
The Crimson Hawks return home Tuesday with a non-divisional doubleheader against Shippensburg at Dougherty Field. First pitch is 1 p.m.
