INDIANA, Pa. –
JP Pellis gave up just two hits over five innings and
Nick Hess drove in a pair of runs to help IUP baseball to a 5-3 victory over Shippensburg Tuesday at Dougherty Field. The game was called due to lightning in the bottom of the sixth inning.
It was the fourth win in the last six games for the Crimson Hawks, who improved their overall record to 12-25.
Pellis picked up the victory, striking out three with five walks and two earned runs over his five innings pitched.
The Crimson Hawks fell behind 1-0 after a first inning homer by Shippensburg's Jack Goertzen. They came back in the third with all the runs they'd need, scoring four runs on four hits and a walk to take a 4-1 lead.
Chris Eisel knocked in IUP's first run of the game with a single to left. Three batters later he and
Jake Cherry came around to score on an RBI single to right field by
Nick Hess.
Ben Teplin followed with another run-scoring single as
Matt Swartz made it 4-1.
A committed a two-out error in the bottom of the fifth to allow
Markus Cestra across the plate.
Tyler Mulhollen came on in the sixth for Pellis and used a double play to negate Shippensburg's only base runner and keep the Raiders off the board.
The game was originally a doubleheader but was changed to a single 9-inning game with an earlier first pitch due to inclement weather in the forecast. Today's game was called with two outs in the bottom of the sixth.
