INDIANA, Pa. – Senior
Jeff Allen struck out a career-high 11 batters in 10-6 game two victory to help IUP baseball sweep a divisional doubleheader with Slippery Rock Saturday at Owen Dougherty Field.
The Crimson Hawks won the opener 10-8 as they extended their win streak to four and improved to 14-25 overall and 7-15 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC). Slippery Rock fell to 13-24 and 3-17.
Allen's 11 strikeouts came in 6.0 innings, as he scattered six hits and gave up four earned runs. He struck out the side in the fifth inning and fanned two batters in each of the first, third and fourth frames.
Allen now has 82 strikeouts this season, the fourth most in single season IUP history. His 219 career strikeouts are third in program history.
Allen did get off to a rocky start with Slippery Rock scoring three in the first and one more in the second to take a 4-0 lead. With the rally caps on IUP came back to tie the game in the third with four runs on RBI singles from
Ben Teplin and
Nick DiAndreth.
The Crimson Hawks scored once more in the fourth and put up three runs in the fifth on a wild pitch, passed ball and RBI double by
Markus Cestra. Insurance runs came in the sixth, including an RBI double by
Colin Williams.
Senior
Colin Claus picked up the win in the opener as the Crimson Hawks provided run support in the second, third and fourth innings to take a 9-5 lead. Cestra had an RBI double in the second, Williams drove home a run on a single in the third and then two more on a double in the fourth.
Williams finished the game 3-for-3 with two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored. Cestra and DiAndreth also had two RBI each.
In between Saturday wins the Crimson Hawks honored their five seniors. Joining Allen and Claus were fellow pitchers
Mike Klingensmith and
Brian Albert and shortstop
Matt Swartz.
Up next
The Crimson Hawks and Slippery Rock wrap up their series Sunday in a doubleheader originally scheduled for Friday. First pitch of game one has been moved to 3 p.m.
