INDIANA, Pa. –
Markus Cestra drove in both of IUP's runs in a 3-2 game two loss to eighth-ranked Mercyhurst Saturday as the Crimson Hawks dropped both ends of a divisional doubleheader at Dougherty Field. Mercyhurst took the opener by a score of 3-0.
Cestra drove in the first run of game two with a single to right that brought
Chris Eisel around after his leadoff double. He then cut IUP's deficit to 3-2 in the fifth inning with an RBI groundout that scored
Nick DiAndreth from third.
Jeff Allen took the loss on the hill after striking out a season-high nine batters in 6.0 innings. He gave up three earned runs on eight hits and two walks. The loss evens his season record at 3-3.
Allen fanned a batter in each of his six innings pitched, including two each in the second, third and fourth innings.
The Lakers (16-4, 8-2) tied the game at 1-1 with a solo homer in the second inning and two more in the fourth on back-to-back RBI hits. Outside of those two scoring innings, Allen allowed just two Mercyhurst base runners.
The losses drop the Crimson Hawks to 7-18 on the year and 1-9 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division play.
Colin Claus took the loss in the opener after striking out eight batters in 6.2 innings. He gave up three earned runs on four hits and three walks.
The Lakers got to Claus in the third inning, getting a single and walk before a double cleared the bases and gave Mercyhurst a 2-0 lead. They added an insurance run in the seventh to make it 3-0.
IUP left a pair of leadoff baserunners stranded in the fourth and fifth innings, but had its best chance to score in the sixth. The Crimson Hawks loaded the bases during its first four batters of the inning, drawing a walk with back-to-back singles, but a pair of popups ended the threat.
