INDIANA, Pa. – In a game that featured 35 runs scored, 36 base hits, 12 errors and extremely high wind gusts, the IUP baseball fell to visiting Lock Haven 18-17 in 10 innings at Owen Dougherty Field Tuesday afternoon.
The game lasted 4:22 with at least one run scored in eight of the 10 innings.
Eight Crimson Hawks combined for the team's 15 base hits, with major production coming at the top of the order. IUP's 1-2-3 hitters of
Chris Eisel,
Markus Cestra and
Matt Swartz combined to go 7-for-17 with a home run, seven runs scored and eight runs batted in. Cestra went 3-for-6 for four RBI and two runs scored.
Other multi-hit days came from
Ben Teplin, Anthony Vigliotti and
Austin Mueller, who each had two hits. Vigliotti drove in three runs.
Five different IUP pitchers saw time on the hill with
JP Pellis going the first four innings in the start.
Nick Kuhn took the loss to fall to 2-3 on the year, striking out five in 2.1 innings.
The Crimson Hawks led 5-3 after five innings but Lock Haven (12-14-1) posted a big top of the sixth with four runs to take a 7-5 lead. IUP rallied to score seven on four hits in the bottom half, taking advantage of three LHU errors to make it a 12-7 ballgame. Cestra and Vigliotti each had 2-RBI base hits in the inning.
The Bald Eagles scored two runs in the seventh and four more in the eighth to go on top 13-12. Cestra tied the game up with one out in the bottom of the ninth with an RBI single to take the game to extras.
Lock Haven had another big inning with five runs in the top of the 10th, but again the Crimson Hawks put their rally caps on.
Tyler Adams hit a leadoff double and three batters later came home on a bases loaded walk.
Three more runs came across on a wild pitch, sacrifice fly and RBI single to make it a 1-run game. The rally ended there with a strikeout and the tying run left on first.
The Crimson Hawks fall to 8-20 overall on the season while Lock Haven improved to 12-14-1.

IUP gets back to divisional play this weekend with a four-game series against Gannon (19-9, 9-3 PSAC West). The teams are scheduled to play in Erie Friday and at Dougherty Field Saturday.
