INDIANA, Pa. – The IUP Athletic Department announced the opening of a fueling station in the Memorial Field House designed to make nutrition a priority and maximize the potential of its student-athletes.

The collaboration between IUP Athletics and Sports Nutrition Services shows the commitment to the well-being of its student-athletes.

"Anytime you can re-invest into your student-athletes it is a good day, and today is one of those days," said IUP Director of Athletics Todd Garzarelli.

"Strategically, we continue to build out a first-class experience for our student-athletes and a fueling station was at the top of the list," Garzarelli continued. "And to be able to collaborate with Nutrition Services to provide real-life experience was a bonus. We look forward to the many benefits this fueling station will provide for our student-athletes and the Department of Food and Nutrition."

"The dawn of a fueling station for IUP student-athletes could not come at a better time!" said IUP Sports Nutrition Faculty Coordinator Nicole Dann-Payne. "More and more NCAA Division II and III institutions are starting up sports nutrition fueling programs, such as fueling stations or fueling zones, while many Division I schools already offer these services. For an already competitive program like IUP Athletics, the start of a fueling station is the icing on the cake."

"The fueling station is definitely something that will benefit all student-athletes at IUP," said senior quarterback Quinton Maxwell. "At times nutrition and its benefits for athletes goes overlooked so this is a step in the right direction."

"I am very excited for the fueling station and to have a place like this to come throughout the day," said IUP women's basketball senior Lexi Griggs. "As student-athletes, our schedules can get crazy running from class-to-class or class-to-practice. It will be great to be able to make a quick stop here in the field house to get something extra to help our bodies."

"I think that implementing the fueling station is a step in the right direction to improve and enhance our student-athlete experience here at IUP," said women's lacrosse head coach and IUP alum Brenna Gallagher. I believe this shows the student-athletes that our department is dedicated to enhancing their success. The fueling station is something that not many institutions have at the Division II level and I think that the student-athletes are really excited about it."

The fueling station is in the lobby of IUP's Memorial Field House and officially opened Monday, August 26. Hours for the fueling station are Monday-Thursday, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Each IUP student-athlete can choose between items such as chocolate milk, apple, and assorted granola bars.

More from Dann-Payne
Having a fueling station provides an opportunity to supplement the diets of IUP student-athletes with foods that can ensure our athletes are adequately fueled (e.g. with carbohydrates, such as fruit, pretzels, low-fat granola bars) going into training and foods that promote recovery from training (e.g. with protein and carbohydrate, such as low-fat chocolate milk, tart cherry juice).

Our IUP Sports Performance Nutrition Services team (SPNS- graduate assistant, graduate student dietetic interns, and undergraduate nutrition and dietetic students) is beyond thrilled to be able to be a part of this exciting venture since it provides our nutrition and dietetic students with a unique hands-on experience working with athletes.

This is truly a win-win opportunity for IUP athletics and IUP's students of the Department of Food and Nutrition! Our SPNS team is looking forward to assisting and educating IUP athletes with their fueling habits to help them become the best athlete they can be!
